Edward Hopper 

The Nighhawk

Inspired by the Nighthawks painting by Edward Hopper that portrays people sitting in a downtown diner late at night in the 1940s. The fifth-grade students drew, with colored pencils, what they thought would represent 21st-century urban dining culture.

The fifth graders create a silhouette self-portrait with a map of their interior thoughts. These mind minds reflect the activities, personal beliefs, and thoughts that express each student's individuality.

Visual Puns

Digital  media

The fifth graders explored language and imagery while they created visual puns. They brainstormed words and phrases that have multiple interpretations and based their sketch off of these concepts. Then, they uploaded their sketches into a digital application, Pixie to digitally add color, shade, and texture to their drawings.

Niki de Saint Phalle Sculptures

Plaster 

The fifth graders learned about the French-American sculptor, painter, filmmaker, and author Niki de Saint Phalle. They made whimsical sculptures inspired by her artworks and completed the 3D works with vibrant painted patterns.

Google Doodle

Multimedia 

The fifth graders participated in Google drawing contest called Doodle for Google. Google asked young artists across the US to create a doodle about what they see for the future and our students answered!

Self Portrait

The fifth-grade class demonstrated how a single color can symbolize emotions with a  value scale of 6 tints and shades.

Gustav Klimt Printmaking

Linoleum &  gold ink

The fifth-grade class learned about Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. Students were inspired by his renowned painting, 'the tree of life', they carved and printed their own compositions of organic lines in gold ink.
